Finding Your Flow

Flow.

Maybe you’ve heard of it, maybe you haven’t. Maybe you’ve heard the terms “in the zone” or “flow state.”

Whichever word you use, we’re talking about that creative space where you’re totally immersed in a specific activity for an extended period of time. That place where you feel energized, focused and “on your game.”

Everything feels right. You may even feel a spiritual high; as if you’re existing on a whole new level.

All the noise from the outside world drifts away. There’s nothing but you and positive, forward moving energy.

Can you think of a time you’ve experienced flow?

A lot of us have felt this at one time or another but I would bet most of us don’t experience flow as often as we’d like.

All the shit we call “adulting” gets in the way.

Social pressure, familial expectations, demands from school or work, etc can all keep us from living in a more authentic way.

When we’re in flow, we feel more aligned. We gain confidence, clarity in what makes us tick and can live our lives according to our own truth.

Making decisions becomes less stressful and anxiety weakens.

Our future becomes so much brighter!

So how do we do this thing called flow?

Living in flow is all about living life more effortlessly; being at ease with yourself and your mind.

A great way to get into your flow is to think about your favorite hobby or activity. Write it down.

Next, write down the skills you already have (and those you may need to develop) in order to make this activity a more integral part of your life.

Set S.M.A.R.T. goals to help you integrate this activity into your life and move ahead in the direction you desire.

Work at the time that works best for you.

Now, this may be difficult for some depending on the job you have, especially if you’ve just started your career.

Although this may be something you don’t have much control over now, it’s still important to recognize how your work schedule impacts your mental health. If you’re feeling fatigued and aren’t performing at your best, that may be something to consider as you move ahead in your position.

Next, focus on your favorite activity. Silence your phone, turn off the iPAD and let yourself become completely immersed in what you’re doing in that specific moment. Allow all of your senses to notice your experience and let yourself move at a pace that feels right for you. Be present.

Notice what takes you in and out of flow. Are you distracted? Are you finding it difficult to focus?

Lastly, keep challenging yourself. Practice these steps and prioritize incorporating your favorite activities into your regular routine more often.
